As part of Music:Leeds’ Launchpad program, we are commissioning a brand new piece of music / sound for performance OR installation at the Leeds International Festival between Thursday 2nd May and Sunday 12th May 2019, by a new music creator based in the Leeds and West Yorkshire region.
We are looking to showcase an exciting new piece of music that should fit within Leeds International Festival program of new ideas and innovation and could either be:
performed by musicians
through audio playback of electronic / electro-acoustic work
or an immersive installation of sound-art
Proposals must be for a new, original and previously unperformed piece of music / sound. Applications will be measured on:
the proposed works’ quality
it’s ability to engage an audience - works that do not include performers, are encouraged to develop an additional Audio-Visual element.
The new music creator will receive a commission fee to support the creation of this new piece of music, and additional support in “staging” the performance – contributing to the purchase or hire of materials, equipment, musicians and/or spaces – for a combined total of upto £4000. The performance will also be filmed and recorded.
Styles welcomed:
All styles welcome including Contemporary / New Music, Classical, New Classical, Electro-Acoustic, Sound Art, Experimental / Avant Garde Electronic Music
Length of New Work:
Minimum 10 minutes of new work. As the work will be showcased as an event during Leeds International Festival, if the new work is under 30 minutes, applicants are encouraged to expand how they could bring in other work or performances to the showcase / event.
The specific venue and date of the performance will be programmed by arrangement with Leeds International Festival and Music:Leeds
If accepted, the selected work is requested to acknowledge that it was commissioned by Music:Leeds / Leeds International Festival for future performances.
In addition to the individual piece of work selected for this commission, a number of new music creators will receive mentoring support and have the opportunity to attend a workshop in partnership with Sound and Music, the national charity for New Music later in the year, as part of the wider Music:Leeds’ Launchpad program.
